From 25 May to four July 1962, the museum held the most important exhibition, Hong Kong Art Today. It was important as the primary exhibition with Hong Kong art as its theme. The exhibition also mirrored how naturalism in art had turn out recommended site to be passé and that summary art was favoured at that moment in time. In 2009, the heirs of German artist George Grosz filed a lawsuit in search of restitution of three works by Grosz, and the heirs of Paul von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy filed a lawsuit demanding the return of the portray by Pablo Picasso, entitled Boy Leading a Horse (1905–1906). The museum was open every day since its founding in 1929, until 1975, when it closed in the future a week to scale back working expenses.
